Bosch Rexroth delivers advanced motion platform for Renault simulator

Bosch Rexroth, the leading company in drive and control solutions, is supplying one of the most advanced motion platforms for a new Renault automotive simulator being constructed by system integrator company AV simulation.

The Rexroth motion platform comprises of a high performance hexapod and rotating yaw table, all on top of a highly rigid x-y table. It incorporates new technologies and linear motors to create a machine that accepts a 6000 kg payload, yet delivers high acceleration and velocities. Up to up to 1 g acceleration can be achieved, together with speeds up to 9 m/s in both longitudinal and lateral directions. Installation of the new platform will begin Q3, 2019, and is due to be completed end of 2019.

“Renault provided very detailed specifications on the simulator they required and the Rexroth system fully matched it“ said Olivier Anselme, Sales Director AV Simulation. “Their long experience in this field was also a crucial factor. We have been working with Rexroth for many years and have a strong relationship.“

“We have been supplying these systems since 2003. In fact, our first system was for Renault,“ said Rik de Swart, Sales Manager Motion Simulation Technology at Bosch Rexroth. “So we are delighted to be able to satisfy Renault’s requirements with our latest solution.“

The completed motion platform will be installed by AV Simulation and fitted with a dome including projectors. The dome will house a test car and be able to accommodate drivers and passengers making safety paramount. The motion platform features a high level of built-in safety measures. Both mechanical and software motion limiting features are utilized so the system cannot exceed its programmed limits. Among many safety features, drives are equipped with Bosch Rexroth ‘Safety on Board’ technology which provides additional security measures like guaranteed safe stop.

While previous XY motion systems rely on a rack and pinion design, the higher speeds and accelerations mean Bosch Rexroth linear motors are used in the new platform. Very quiet and with very low vibration, linear motors ensure the guidance systems can control the platform very specifically, even while moving the heavy payload at high speed.

High performance at high speeds does put a heavy demand on power. The Rexroth design helps minimize grid power requirements, by incorporating its 4EE technology that can store and reuse the energy generated during deceleration phases.
