Large Electric Drives from Rexroth are certified for marine applications

Two marine classification societies, DNV GL and ABS, have certified the IndraDrive ML electric drive from Rexroth as “type approved” for use in ships and offshore equipment. The modular drive series covers a power range from 110 kW to up to four megawatts and supports a voltage range from 380 V to 690 V. The international certifications reduce engineering overheads for the suppliers of maritime plants.

Non-proprietary marine classification societies set the technical standards globally and test the suitability of all relevant components and assemblies for ship building and offshore applications. Now two of these societies, Det Norske Veritas Germanischer Lloyd (DNV GL) and American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), have certified the IndraDrive ML drive series from Rexroth. All of the drive components have successfully passed the comprehensive tests. The tests examined reliability at various temperatures, levels of humidity and vibrations as well as the electromagnetic compatibility and environmental aspects. With the certification, design engineers can use the drives without needing further acceptance.

IndraDrive ML can be used as a power supply and a motor inverter. This minimizes the variants, simplifies handling and reduces the storage costs for machine manufacturers and end users. The universal inverters generate a drive capacity between 110 kW and 500 kW per unit. Using a parallel connection of up to eight units, the drive capacity increases up to four MW. This means that the series covers practically all application scenarios for maritime use. It also supports the usual power supply voltages from 380 V to 690 V used in this sector.
