DMU 600 P – THE gantry machine designed for ultralarge components

With its DMU 600 P DMG has established itself in the sector of large-part production and meets the demands of heavy-duty machine production.

The dimensions of the standard DMU 600 P alone are enough to make it perfectly clear that this universal machine is designed for the machining of extremely large and heavy components – such as the moulds needed for automobile manufacturing or the giant components of the aerospace and energy sectors. The travel of 6,000 mm in the X-direction and 4,200 mm in the Y-direction are convincing arguments in the horizontal plane. In the vertical direction, the optional crossbeam has a path of maximum 2,000 mm and the ram stroke provides an additional 1,500 mm. Such dimensions meet the requirements of industry, as does the rigid table that can accommodate workpieces of up to 40,000 kg on its surface area of 2,800 x 5,000 mm and that can be moved in the X-direction.

Following the outstanding performance and great success of the DMU 600 P in its standard version with customers, and at the request of heavy-duty manufacturers in general, this machine has now been expanded to include some highly productive innovations. Thanks to the extension of the Y-axis to 4,800 mm workpieces up to a width of 3,500 mm can now be machined in the horizontal Y-direction using the respective tools. The vertical gantry clearance has also been expanded by 600 mm and now measures 3,600 mm. Another highlight of the machine is its three tables that can be coupled together to provide a total machining length of 18,000 mm. Machining in alternating mode is also possible rendering idle times or setup times virtually negligible. Machining options are also expanded by an adaptable dividing attachment which enables the machining of workpieces with diameters of up to 3,000 mm and lengths of 17,000 mm. The DMU 600 P has been equipped with a tool arena including a robotic handling system in order to facilitate a changeover of machining tools weighing up to 80 kg with lengths of 1,000 mm and diameters of 400 mm. Short tool changeover times in the horizontal and vertical direction is achieved thanks to the use of a double gripper arm also ensures a high degree efficiency.

The possibility of 5-axis simultaneous machining together with the modular building block concept of the DMU 600 P - consisting of the gantry, the machine bed, different table variants, magazines and headstocks - offers users the flexibility required for the manufacture of complex moulds and components. Where milling is concerned the user has a choice of interchangeable milling heads, which can be coupled to an integrated C-axis and automatically interchanged via a magazine.

There are also milling heads with integrated A and B-axes available for 5-axis simultaneous machining in addition the vertical and angular milling heads. Quite apart from its versatility, the performance of the large gantry machine is impressive: powerful gear spindles with torques up to 2,500 Nm and a maximum speed of 6,000 rpm are available for highly productive milling operations on the one hand, while the portfolio also includes motor spindles with speeds up to 24,000 rpm.

Fast and user friendly

The swivel time of 1.2 sec. for 180° that is achieved by the drives of the rotary axes guarantees enormous time savings and therefore also cost savings for machining directly on the workpiece. The fast feed rates of up to 30 m/min in the linear axes and 3 m/s² acceleration rates also facilitate dynamic machining. The large travel ranges in particular minimize idle times and this in turn leads to shorter machining times.

The innovative new design has also been implemented consistently in the case of the DMU 600. The completely enclosed work area, which offers an unobstructed view and is ideally illuminated, prevents chips from flying around and coolant from squirting out. This makes the workplace safer, protects the environment and saves cleaning costs. With regard to the controls, the user-friendly DMG ERGOline® control panel with its 19”-screen is further proof of the sophisticated machine concept. Customers have a choice of either Heidenhain iTNC 530 or the Siemens 840D solutionline controls as 3-D software options. Both systems excel through their simple and intuitive operation.

Versatility on a grand scale

The gantry building block design that has already proved so successful on the market is also the basis of the DMU 600 P. The modular concept encompasses different tool magazines, several milling heads and various table variants. In addition to the rigid table already mentioned, there is also an optional milling-turning table (FD) available which enables both milling and turning operations on the workpiece in a single setup. The use of standard components also ensures good spare part availability. The gantry design of the DMU 600 P also offers a range of other benefits, the machine base made of GGG60 casting, for example, has optimum damping characteristics giving the DMU 600 P an outstandingly solid construction and guaranteeing maximum consistent long-term accuracy.

The underlying principle of top machine quality on the one hand and optimum productivity on the other that is applicable for all DMG Mori machines is equally valid for the DMU 600 P. Customers also reap the benefit of an excellent service offer. Unlike other manufacturers of heavy-duty machines of this kind, DECKEL MAHO can fall back on a global service network that guarantees fast response times even on an international level.
