NAXOS-DISKUS Schleifmittelwerke – The bonding makes the difference

The demands on machining centres and tools have increased hand in hand with the development of less wearprone steel alloys. In the grinding tool segment, the high-quality abrasive grit CBN – also known as cubic boron nitride – increasingly made the running and is already indispensable in the automotive industry in particular. However, the deciding factor concerning a CBN-grinding tool's performance level – apart from the abrasive grit itself – is the bonding which holds the CBN grit structure together. With AUMENTO PRO, the advanced development of the well-established CBN bonding AUMENTO, NAXOS-DISKUS Schleifmittelwerke GmbH, the grinding tool specialist within the DVS TECHNOLOGY GROUP, is now setting new benchmarks in the field of bonding quality.

With their sights set on being able to offer optimum bonding for high-quality abrasive grit such as CBN or diamond, development engineers at NAXOS-DISKUS Schleifmittelwerke came up with “AUMENTO”. A new, high-strength bonding was created and is still proving its worth in practice. Long tool service lives, an improved degree of hardness and optimised material removal rate continue to be the outstanding quality features of the AUMENTO bonding. The advanced development AUMENTO PRO will raise the benchmark for bonding once again, and exceed what has already been achieved. The plan of achieving further optimisation of the bonding in terms of ease of cutting and tool service life, leading to further cost savings by the user, has been implemented.

Higher parameters for feed motions and supply

Thanks to the further optimised stability of AUMENTO PRO, the CBN abrasive grit is bonded very tightly into the matrix. This makes it possible to reduce the bond share even further, yet at the same time increase the bonding strength of the abrasive grit. In practice, this leads to an additional increase in grinding wheel performance. In addition, higher parameters for feed and supply rates can be realised. Reducing the bond share also increases the pore space, which in turn increases the supply of grinding coolant to the grinding contact zone, thus supporting the removal of grinding sludge and the grinding temperature. The grinding forces required are also reduced, thus lowering the grinding pressure used in the process.

Reduced machining times and tool costs

All these performance characteristics were proven during a benchmark test on a machine belonging BUDERUS Schleiftechnik, a mechanical engineering company which, like NAXOS-DISKUS, is a member of the DVS TECHNOLOGY GROUP. The test results clearly prove that the process parameters feed and supply rate were increased by 20% when the advanced development AUMENTO PRO was used compared with AUMENTO. The resulting reduction in machining time frees up more production resources and lowers the costs per workpiece. Tool expenses are further reduced thanks to the longer tool service life of the AUMENTO PRO grinding wheels.
