    Question on 12x36 lathe

I am in the market for a lathe, and was originally leaning towards a 10x22 bench top version.

After posting there, a poster pointed out the full gearbox versions are far superior.

I am pretty new to turning, I have some experience on a 3 in 1.

I have been doing a lot of research on the topic and I am now leaning towards a 12x36 Grizzly.

My question is Grizzly sells a G4003 and a G4003G.

The G4003G is a gunsmith version of the G4003.

When you figure in the price of the stand for the G4003, the G4003G is actually slightly cheaper, and it looks to me like it has some better features.

Is there any reason NOT to get the G4003G? I have no intention on making guns at all, just general machining, but the G4003G looks slightly better, for a slightly better price. Am I missing something about accessories or something else?

I have been looking at them as well. I originally was leaning toward the 4003G, but the 4003 has a 5C collet attachment that would work well with the 8 position ATC I plan on building.

I actually don't see that at all in the specs or the ads, where are you seeing that about the 5C collet attachment? I must be blind.

I also noticed that the 4003 has a D1-4 for it's cam lock spindle, and the G has the D1-5.

My understanding was that the D1-5 is a bit sturdier, but Grizzly actually charges less for the D1-5 than they do D1-4. Not sure if this makes much of a difference at all, just something I noticed.

You can find the collet attachment for the 4002 and 4003 at G4026 Collet Attachment for G4002 -03

I don't know if it could be modified to work with the 4003G, i think the 4 outboard end support screws interfere with mounting it

I agree that the larger D1-5 would be sturdier, but i think they are not as common

    Interesting, thanks.

Would you mind telling me what that thing would be used for?

I want to see if that is a reason to stick with the 4003 instead do the 4003G.

    Thanks.

It will allow you to clamp normal sized bar stock faster than setting it up in a 3 or 4 jaw chuck since all you have to do is pull up the lever to release and push it back down to clamp back down on the bar stock. With a tool changer, a linear actuator, and a bar puller, you can automate a run of several pieces without having to set up the stock again. Here’s a YouTube video of a 4002 with a 5C attachment and an article on bar puller basics.
