Great, now I have to pull the gear box apart to fix this. After that, I am going to try and sell this piece of [garbage]. I have had so many issues with this machine, it's been down for repairs...
Is this a common problem? The collets now spin freely
Here is the best image I could take looking up into it
The machine doesn't have many hours on it, light work (AL), and maybe less than 50...
What is the best way to change gears, particularly High and Low on the 12Z manual machine?
There is binding since new (with the machine off) where it will not completely shift into H or L in...
Technically I don't have it, COA has it. I just want to use the machine at this point, if I wear out the Z-nut, then that means I have actually used the machine =)
Update on my mill issues
Paul has sent me at no charge: gibb shims, Z-screw bolt/washer, (2) Z-nuts, (2) Z-nut bolts
- None of the Z-nut tapered pin holes line up to the Z-slide, I assume the...
In the Z-nut play shown in the video normal? If it is, why?
Update 3: I guess I can't edit the original post anymore for some reason.
The more I dig into the issue, the more bad stuff keeps revealing itself. I assume the root cause is the very short bolt...
I think I have to tear it apart now:

Sounds like a good plan. I spoke with COA this morning, he suggested the lead screw bolt may be loose at the bottom gear.
In addition; they are mailing me a set of shims of different...
So you don't think the Z-axis nut issue is a problem? I can watch the Z-axis lead screw turning without any resistance or movement of the head. When lowering the Z-axis, it lurches,...
Update 1: Called COA 3/18/2015 8am, got advice on what to check and they are sending me some shims for the Gib. The play I am experiencing in the Z-axis may be a loose gear bolt on the Z lead screw....
I will do an oil change for now. I assume you're referring to the COA belt drive upgrade? Thanks for the advice.
Chinese beer? See image below, this is 10 seconds after the very first time turning the spindle on. Just checking if this is normal. I have some Mobile DTE 26 standing by.

Wiki tells me AL foil is about ~.008" thick; thank you for the suggestion I will try it out
Installing my new 12Z. I noticed the Y gib was loose (the adjusters weren't even touching the gib) so I setup the X and Y axes just fine. I ran into an issue with the Z-axis gib, it is bottomed out...
Looks great! Are those rubber pads that your mill sits on? I got some 1/4" Buna-N pads, 60 duro, hoping that will help isolate some of the harmonics.
Thanks! Still got to install the pan, hopefully that works out...I'm not much of a sheet metal guru
Here is my take on a stand for the 12Z manual mill. 100% TIG welded for the sake of improving my steel TIG skills. All 0.120" wall 2" square tubing. I have a coolant pan for it and plan on fully...
The users would probably have very limited to no supervision. This is a community run maker space, no employees. People "buy" time by being either a member paying dues or even you can be a guest...
I totally see your point and trying to communicate this to the group.
What is better aligned with the mission of this DIY maker space?
1) Don't get a more affordable CNC mill; teach no one...
In regards to the comments about 3-6 hrs of training:
I am looking at the best practices of TechShop. There is a 2.0 hr of "Concepts of CNC" course and then a 3.0 hr Tormach class that you have to...
If we wanted to compare these machines disregarding: 1) Work Envelope, 2) Horsepower
What can the Haas do that the Tormach can't for cutting non-ferrous and ferrous metals? Assume the Tormach has...
Anyone have the bolt size and pattern for the base of this mill handy?
I am about to make the investment in one of these mills and just wanted to start designing a stand for it. I considered...
It's not always about weight, consider the Moment of Inertia. A square section (~boxed column) MOI is driven by length^4. This means as the size of the box gets bigger, it is not a linear increase in...
We have YCM machines in production at our plant. We've replaced all the spindles in them so far, only $35K for the spindle assembly. I don't know how many cycles were put on them, but they've only...
Our manual for G53 says:
Note:(1) G53 is effective only under the absolute mode G90.
(2) G53 is a one-shot G code.
I assume that "one-shot" means I need to G53 every block.
When google...
I am trying to write a program to test an air blow off cycle on a Fanuc 31i 5-axis CNC. The fixture is common but the parts/programs will change, so I figured I could call this sub-program for...
I am playing with CNCsimulator, trying to program a part, but it is not doing what I expect for doing a finish pass in a slot I just cut. On the G41, X1.1873 Y-.6855 is supposed to be the "fake...
