Changing / Selecting gears High and Low, 12Z rf45 Mill manual gearbox

What is the best way to change gears, particularly High and Low on the 12Z manual machine?

There is binding since new (with the machine off) where it will not completely shift into H or L in either direction of selection, so I move the spindle by hand assuming this was the correct way. It engages smoothly after I index the spindle. Is this normal? I am now experiencing binding where the whole machine locks up, where the spindle is jammed along with the H and L shift lever. I have to now index the electric motor by "bumping" the Forward/Reverse switches to complete the shift between H and L.

That is pretty much the way every machine with a gearbox works, you frequently have to move the spindle by hand to get the gears to mesh when changing speed. Just like on a gear head lathe.

It is not normal to have to "jog" the machine to get it engaged.
