I would consider "Self Diagnostics" to include such things as memory tests, verifying that sub-systems are connected and operational, checksums on firmware and software, checking that connected...
You're right about not needing PWM to operate those drives. Just a switch for direction, maybe one for enable, and a square wave to make it move. You'll probably want some means of varying the...
You could do the same thing with a 555 timer and some logic, but the uC would simplify things. I guess what I would do if I was in a hurry, would be to buy one of those drives and see if it will do...
Ok, I found the mill here http://www.warco.co.uk/ZX-15-Milling-Machine-7B040AEC96.aspx
Do you have any experience making PCB's?
Jon
A simple micro-controller could be interfaced to just about any stepper drive to give you those functions you want. You didn't mention how largish this machine is. Are you sure 2.5 amps is going to...
That uses a L298 driver, if you're good you could parallel another to it, see data sheet. There are tons of DIY drives on this site you could go with instead you messing around with mods. How...
I would suggest some small micro-controller for the project, but some fancy logic on a PLD could handle the requirements.

Clackvalve. "
I'm not sure of all the details, but it should be possible...
Any chance of using your browsers history to find where you went?
Jon
Got it back Monday... shipping didn't do it much good.
Jon
You've had my stuff for nearly a year now, any chance I'm going to get it back?
Jon
Any news?
Jon
Do you have any specifications for the motors you are getting?
Jon
I thought links to these two threads would be appropriate, since one discusses which Coolrunner kit to buy.

Well after fighting with getting the lid off the pump (somebody siliconed it good), and cleaning the pickup screen, it now seems to have fixed the problem.
By the way this had the internal...
Our LB15/OSP5020L is giving a "907 ALARM-C lube tank flow 1" alarm. I've taken the lube line loose at the pump and cycled it and it's delivering oil from the pump.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Jon
Congrats on the job.
Jon
I guess the problem has been solved.
Brian,
I was looking at your photo album and saw a couple of things to comment on. I suggest you read the datasheet for the L298, there is a suggested layout for this circuit on page 9 that would...
Ok, you don't need the voltage at rest. Now do the constant speed voltage measurement on the good drive, just for comparison.
Jon
Check the voltages while the motor is moving at a constant speed.
I could see the schematic and took a look at the rest of your machine. Has this been running before with no problems?
Jon
Not sure how much I'll be able to help, but I guess the first thing I would do is compare the voltage readings at pins 1 and 15 of the 298 while it's running, they should be close to the same. Then...
Is it a commercial drive or something you built? Got a schematic?
Jon
I had something like that happen to me before. Although my drives don't use the L297/298 combination, if I recall they still use sensing resistors. Anyway turned out that one of the sensing...
Try swapping the x and y drivers and see if the problem follows the drive.
Jon
Hi Wade,
Any progress with this project? If it's a lost cause, I could issue a call tag to have my test setup returned.
Jon
What would be the exchange price?
Jon
Well I have it here in front of me. Just checked a couple of places for getting it repaired, one was $500 Ha They gotta be crazy! There's about $2.00 dollars worth of TTL chips on it and a couple...
Hi Superman Steve,
That command line produces the same error.
2504 no tape data ERROR
