Hommel+Keller at the EMO: Quicker and more effective – experience a new form of marking and knurling

Hommel+Keller Präzisionswerkzeuge at EMO
Quicker and more effective – experience a new form of marking and knurling
A well-rounded line-up ranging from a specialist presentation to a raffle

Knurling, marking, diamond burnishing, gear cutting – as different as they may be, all tools from Hommel+Keller Präzisionswerkzeuge GmbH provide impressive flexibility, precision and cost-effectiveness. The company, based in Aldingen in Germany, will be using the international industry platform provided by EMO to present its innovative technologies in hall 4, stand D24. New developments in knurling and diamond burnishing tools, interesting application examples, a specialist presentation on marking technology as well as a raffle are just a few highlights of what Hommel+Keller has in store for visitors to the trade fair.

“At EMO, we want not only to present our customers and visitors with the latest developments, but to inspire them. In addition to our tools, we will be showcasing examples of applications that demonstrate the machining possibilities available – such as our QUICK F711 and F711-IK knurling tools, which we have optimised for series production. There will be something for those interested in our marking technology, too,” promised Adrian Sunderer, product manager at Hommel+Keller Präzisionswerkzeuge GmbH.

Knurling tool optimised for high volume production

The QUICK F711 form knurling tool is the all-rounder tool from Hommel+Keller and enables a wide range of applications thanks to its maximum stability and flexibility. The new internal cooling and quick clamping systems make the tool particularly suited to use in high volume production machining. The careful orientation of the cooling system towards the knurling wheels reduces wheel wear and therefore set-up times. The internal cooling system also takes up less space in the machine than an external cooling system. The new quick clamping system ensures easy, quick and safe knurling wheel changes thanks to fewer operating steps and the way in which screws to be loosened are secured such that they cannot fall into the machine.

“In our first application example, we demonstrate how flexibly the F711 and F711-IK tools can be used. Not only do they allow all profiles, but moving the Y-axis enables two different profiles to be applied to a single workpiece in one work process,” explained Adrian Sunderer. The bilateral mounting of the knurling wheels ensures maximum stability.

zeus burnishing tools: double the tool life

Another highlight is the newly developed holder as well as the optimisation of the diamond tip in the zeus burnishing tools. This means that a tip can be used for twice as long – at a consistently high surface quality of Rz < 1 µm. How does that work? The diamond cone can now be optimally used in eight different positions.

Marking really can be this fast

Complete documentation is essential for quality assurance. However, many types of marking, including laser marking, are expensive. With the flexible and precise zeus marking tools, marking is directly integrated into the machining process, eliminating additional costs for set-up, transit and idle times. Anyone who wants find out more about the innovative marking technology will have the opportunity not only when visiting the stand at EMO but also at the VDMA Forum at 10:10 on Thursday 19 September. Here, Adrian Sunderer will deliver a presentation entitled ‘Fast – faster – the fastest: marking within one second’ about machine marking as part of a machining process. During the presentation, he will use an example of an application that will also be on show at the stand to illustrate the applications of the zeus marking tools, explain the financial benefits of marking integrated within work processes and demonstrate the flexibility allowed by the modular system.

“We will be showcasing what our marking tools can do with our second application example: socket wrench inserts from tool manufacturer GEDORE. For marking, we were faced with a real challenge, as GEDORE required unusually deep embossing of 0.3 mm. On top of this was the very hard material and a wide range of different characters (logos, numbers, small and large lettering) as well as multi-line marking,” said Peter Hippler, application engineer at Hommel+Keller Präzisionswerkzeuge GmbH. “Using our zeus 432 marking tool featuring spring return segments, we were able to meet the requirements. We reached the embossing depth thanks to a steeper profile angle of lettering segments, from 90° to 60° in some instances. The zeus RD2-141 tool is used for plunge knurling (knurling profile on workpiece – RGE 45°) at the upper end.”

Raffle for visitors to the stand

Hommel+Keller is providing an additional incentive to pay a visit to the stand in the form of a raffle. It will be entering all visitors into a draw to win three GEDORE tool kits, in keeping with the application used as an example: a GEDORE 1/2” socket wrench kit (23-piece), a GEDORE motor vehicle tool kit in a bag (29-piece) and a GEDORE DIY tool kit in a bag (9-piece).
