Chip breaking problems solved

horn news Image

One of the biggest challenges in boring is the formation of long ribbons of swarf. Depending on the material, swarf from boring often wraps around the tool, clogs holes or, in the worst case, leads to tool breakage. With the Supermini type 105, Paul Horn GmbH has succeeded in developing a universal boring tool with sintered chip breaking geometry. The tool offers a high level of process reliability thanks to its good chip control. Horn is rounding off this tool family with two additional sizes, which will be shown at the INTEC 2025 trade fair. The tool manufacturer is now offering inserts for boring diameters from 4 mm, 5 mm and 6 mm. The cutting edge geometry extends far into the corner radius of the insert, ensuring good chip control even when taking shallow cuts. The geometry can be used universally for different material groups and is suitable for internal, face, copy and reverse turning.

In addition to the geometry, Horn has optimised the insert blank to give it greater rigidity and an even more stable cutting edge. The designers also revised the coolant supply. The inserts are compatible with numerous type 105 tool holders. As standard, Horn offers the tools in three overhang lengths (15.0 mm, 20.0 mm and 25.0 mm) and in the TH35 and IG35 grades. For the variant used for boring holes from 4 mm, overhang lengths of 15 mm and 20 mm are available. The corner radius is 0.2 mm. Despite the wide range of applications for the inserts, they are nevertheless cost-effective. In comparison to lasered geometries, the costs of the new Superminis are in a similar range to those of the standard cutting insert without geometry.

Users can choose the correct machining solution from a wide range of different tool holder variants. These include round, square, interface and adjustable holders for various machine manufacturers. Horn offers four different solutions for clamping the insert: Classic screw clamping via a ball pressure screw, clamping via a face clamping element and clamping via a lifting element. For confined spaces, Horn also has in its programme a slimline system with clamping via a union nut.

Boring, profile turning, internal grooving, threading, chamfering, axial grooving, drilling and grooving: The Supermini tool system can be adapted and used for numerous machining operations. The carbide insert is used for machining bores from 0.2 mm to around 10 mm in diameter. Horn developed the blank of the tool as a teardrop shape. It enables precise and large contact surfaces in the tool holder, which results in greater rigidity of the overall system. Furthermore, the teardrop shape prevents the insert from twisting, which leads to consistently precise positioning of the centre height of the tool. With long tool overhangs, it reduces deflection and minimises vibration during turning. Depending on the application and the hole diameter to be machined, Horn offers the insert in three different sizes (types 105, 109 and 110) and various blank types. All variants enable internal coolant supply directly to the cutting zone. The Horn tool portfolio contains around 2,500 different standard variants of the Supermini. In addition, Horn has solved users' problems with countless customised solutions.
