At this year’s Paris Air Show, the Sandvik Coromant stand reflects the diversity of aerospace component machining by presenting a cross-section of solutions focusing on different workpiece materials. For instance, areas in the spotlight are: the milling of aluminium, the drilling of nickel-based super alloys, and the milling of CFRP composites.

Milling aluminium

Aimed specifically at manufacturers engaged in the roughing of aluminium aero-frame components is a new stocked, special end mill. When deployed in combination with a high power spindle, this innovative indexable insert milling cutter can achieve unprecedented stability levels and metal removal rates in high speed milling operations. Furthermore, there is no compromise to cutting edge position, which is assured by the precision of the insert seat interface.

The new end mill for aluminium offers feed rates of up to 0.3 mm/tooth.

Machining composites

Machining solutions for composite and metallic stack materials will also feature prominently on the Sandvik Coromant stand – for customers using hand held, power feed or CNC machines.

Among the latest product introductions in this area is the CoroMill Plura compression end mill for composites. This new cutter combines positive and negative helix design to ‘compress’ the top and bottom of the component edge. The result is minimized opportunity for splintering, a common defect when machining CFRP.

Drilling superalloys

For manufacturers seeking improvements in the production of Ni/Co-based superalloys, titanium or stainless steels, Paris Air Show visitors are advised to discover more about the advantages of CoroDrill® R846 solid carbide drills.

To help optimize chip formation and hole quality, CoroDrill R846 offers convex edge geometry, a larger back taper and internal coolant supply. The consistent curve shape and protected corners deliver reliable and safe drilling processes for those producing high value-added components. Cutting speed can be boosted by up to 100% in aerospace machining applications such as turbine parts. The range has recently been extended and can now be offered in diameters from 3 to 16 mm.

Paris Air Show visitors are invited to the Smart Hub B139 in Hall 4 for an informal chat with one of the instantly recognizable Sandvik Coromant Yellow Coat team. The company’s experts are more than happy to discuss any existing or forthcoming component machining challenges.
