About Synhelion
What are solar fuels?
Solar fuels are synthetic fuels produced from solar energy. Our solar fuels contribute to a zero-emissions transportation sector by directly replacing fossil fuels. They are carbon-neutral as they only emit as much CO2 as went into their production. They are fully compatible with existing global fuel infrastructure. The most economically viable, scalable, and environmentally friendly solution for clean, long-distance transportation.

Our technology
Synhelion uses solar heat to convert CO2 into so-called solar fuels. Our solutions combine state-of-the-art solar tower systems with proprietary high-temperature thermochemical processes. The Synhelion technology unites four key innovations: The mirrors (heliostats), the solar receiver, the thermochemical reactor and the thermal energy storage.

Solar energy is the cheapest and most abundant renewable energy resource. The challenge lies in harnessing this huge energy potential. Synhelion has developed proprietary solar technologies that generate high-temperature process heat from solar energy. We primarily use this solar heat to produce solar fuels. However, our solar heat can also support the decarbonization of a variety of industries.
Our story
Reducing CO2 emissions is the greatest challenge of our time. We contribute to a zero-emissions transportation sector by replacing fossil fuels with carbon-neutral solar fuels. It all started with a crazy idea at ETH Zurich. What if we could reverse combustion? We are now ready to build the world’s first industrial solar fuel production plant, taking us closer to a world connected by clean and sustainable transportation.
