universal machine technology interface
The OPC UA Job Management & Carbon Footprint Demonstrator showcases the seamless integration of standardized machine interfaces and digital product twins within the umati ecosystem. It combines OPC UA Companion Specifications with the Asset Administration Shell (AAS) to enable end-to-end data flows from machine operations to product documentation.
The demonstrator includes multiple OPC UA-enabled devices and clients, illustrating how MES-scheduled jobs can be transmitted to non-OPC UA machines via OPC UA for Machinery Job Management. Job results are automatically stored in an open-source AAS repository, creating a digital twin of the product. A highlight is the Chocolate Printer, which receives job files via OPC UA File Transfer and prints QR-coded labels containing product-specific AAS data.
In parallel, the demonstrator calculates the COâ‚‚ footprint of products in real time using standardized OPC UA data models. Machines share energy and production data in a trusted data space via the umati Gateway and EDC Connector. The calculated footprint is stored in the AAS Carbon Footprint submodel and made available as a digital product passport.
The solution is based on established OPC UA specifications including OPC UA for Machinery, Job Management, File Transfer, Devices, Machine Tools (OPC 40501), and Energy Consumption Management (OPC 34100). It supports both classic client/server communication and modern data space integration via dataspace connectors.
Benefits:
- End-to-end job execution and documentation via OPC UA and AAS
- Real-time COâ‚‚ footprint calculation and digital product passport generation
- Integration of non-OPC UA machines via umati Gateway
- Trusted data exchange through EDC Connector and dataspace architecture
- Seamless interoperability across machines, MES, and product lifecycle systems
- Scalable and future-proof through open standards and modular architecture
