"Implementing the Hydrogen Accelerator in RePowerEU"

The VDMA supports the European Commission's target in RePowerEU to reduce purchases of Russian natural gas by two-thirds by the end of 2022 and end them by 2030. The target to increase the available amount of renewable hydrogen to 20 million tons by 2030 is ambitious, but feasible. Current renewable hydrogen production capacity is only a few gigawatts worldwide, but plant manufacturers, including many VDMA members, can quickly ramp up their electrolyzer production capacities. Already today, established electrolyzer manufacturers are planning larger production plants against the backdrop of the Green Deal and the goals of the EU hydrogen strategy. In addition, new players are entering the market.

Mechanical and plant engineering is ripe for industrial scaling. Successful implementation of accelerated hydrogen expansion now needs bold action and the right regulatory framework to provide the industry with a learning curve and flexibility until 2030. In particular, what is needed is

• A pragmatic approach to crediting renewable electricity for hydrogen production that creates more flexibility.
• An accelerated expansion of hydrogen production - in Europe and beyond.
• The accelerated, large-scale expansion of infrastructure.
• The strengthening of the legal framework for hydrogen demand as part of the "Fit for 55" package.
