100 years of VOLLMER as a training company

The Ulm Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK Ulm) honours 100 years of training at VOLLMER in Biberach. To mark the anniversary, Otto Sälzle, Chief Executive of the IHK Ulm, presented VOLLMER with a certificate celebrating "100 years of VOLLMER as a training company" in a fitting location: VOLLMER's training workshop. The first recorded apprenticeship began all the way back in 1916. Ever since then, training at the sharpening specialists from Biberach has been a real guarantee of success – both for the region and for the company. To date, more than 1500 trainees and students have walked through VOLLMER's doors.

Young people are being inspired by technology
"In the region around Biberach, I know of no other company that can look back on such a long history of offering training," says Otto Sälzle, Chief Executive of the IHK Ulm. "It gives me great pleasure to congratulate VOLLMER on the 100-year anniversary of their training programme, and I hope that the company continues to inspire future generations of young people to enter careers in the technical and business sectors."

Since 1916 – the year in which the first documented training contract was signed at VOLLMER – much has been done to improve the way in which the trainees are prepared for their future careers. In 1935, the world leader in grinding and eroding machine technology was the very first company in Biberach to establish its own apprenticeship workshop. Even today, this is where trainees are prepared for their future jobs in the various specialist departments. To ensure that the apprentices can get to grips with the very latest technology, the company has recently invested some €230,000 in new machinery for the training workshop.

Best prospects for young people
Over the last few years, the number of trainees has increased by between eleven and twelve per cent, more than double the average rate for the metal and electrical industries. This means that, to date, more than 1500 trainees and students have trusted VOLLMER to be their vocational training ground. Of the 500 or so members of staff currently employed in Biberach, more than half received their training there or undertook a dual study programme with the sharpening specialists. In fact, over one third of the skilled employees – such as master craftsmen, division managers and department managers – were apprenticed at VOLLMER.

Around 60 trainees and students at VOLLMER
There are currently around 60 trainees and students employed in Biberach. The types of training posts cover a broad spectrum – from industrial mechanics, cutting tool mechanics and equipment and systems electricians, to mechatronics engineers and IT specialists, right through to industrial clerks. The company offers prospective students the choice of three dual study programmes in association with the Ulm University of Applied Sciences and the Ravensburg University of Cooperative Education, from which the trainees can graduate with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or International Business. Yet even in this, VOLLMER is continually breaking new ground and funding scholarships for promising young talent. Moreover, trainees at VOLLMER have the opportunity for further individual study through seminars and trips overseas, as well as working independently on projects.

"What we sow today, we will reap tomorrow – and so it goes for the next 100 years too," says Dr Stefan Brand, CEO of the VOLLMER plants in Biberach. "Jobs are becoming increasingly digitalised and diversified. As a traditional company that prides itself on always learning new things, we want our training content to be continually updated to keep up with technical progress. For this reason, we are always investing in the latest technology and establishing contact with potential employees of the future as early as possible, such as through training partnerships with local schools."
