Question Is a direct-drive lathe better?

    Hello everyone,
We will purchase a new lathe and we have learned that the spindle is belt-driven. Will this be a problem? Is a direct-drive lathe better?
hope to know more differences between these two kinds.
    Thx.

    Better -- yes.
    Mostly.
But almost certainly You will not choose to afford one .. the prices are well above the 100.000€ and up range.

Making a large servo motor with lathe-quality bearings is actually not all that hard.
But it is expensive, in small quantities, and the special skewed stator parts are not complex but are expensive, if or when you only make a few.

Yes, I know high prices are a hindrance, but sometimes quality and performance justify the cost for those with specific needs. Regarding servo motor manufacture, I agree it's not overly hard conceptually, but cost factors for small quantities and specialized parts are challenging. It's interesting to note these production aspects and their impact. Maybe costs will come down in the future with tech advances and economies of scale.

Difference between belt-driven and direct-drive for your reference.
