Beginning of April, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the UN body for assessing the science related to climate change, published the third and final section of the IPCC’s comprehensive review. IPCC’s AR6 Working Group III that has published the report is consisting of 278 authors from 65 countries. Their findings are alarming: Greenhouse gas emissions must peak latest by 2025, the next few years are critical, they say. Without immediate and deep emissions reductions across all sectors, limiting global warming to 1.5°C is beyond reach, the report states.
The scientists are convinced that, among others, limiting global warming will involve a substantial reduction in fossil fuel use, improved energy efficiency, and use of alternative fuels. Regarding mobility and transportation, they state that “sustainable biofuels, low emissions hydrogen, and derivatives (including synthetic fuels) can support mitigation of CO2 emissions from shipping, aviation, and heavy-duty land transport but require production process improvements and cost reductions. Many mitigation strategies in the transport sector would have various co-benefits(…)”.
