Die "Solar Initiative" der EU wurde vom EU-Innovationsnetzwerk Inno Energy sowie der "Solar Power Europe" gegründet. Ziel ist es, die Renaissance der europäischen Photovoltaik-Industrie zu begleiten.

Die Gründung der "European Solar Initiative" (ESI) hat eine starke Photovoltaik-Industrie in Europa über die gesamte Wertschöpfungskette hinweg zum Ziel. Langristig soll die Initiative dazu beitragen, die wirtschaftliche Erholung Europas zu beschleunigen, die Einhaltung der Ziele des Green Deal zu sichern sowie kritische Abhängigkeiten zu vermeiden. Der Fokus von ESI liegt auf der Generierung eines EU-weiten Technologie-Ökosystems, die Finanzierung und Risikoabsicherung verschiedener Industrieprojekte und ein geeigneter regulativer Rahmen.
