Beginning with a short overview on the Liebherr group, the product portfolio of the company Liebherr-Verzahntechnik is introduced. Besides gear cutting machines and gear cutting tools, also automations systems can be supplied. This presentation focusses on the latest technological developments regarding gear hobbing and generating grinding.

Starting with gear hobbing, some applications for high performance cutting are given using the latest tool systems like carbide hobs (e.g. automotive applications) or ICI tools (heavy duty applications). Taking care of the increasing demands for integrated chamfering and deburring, the presentation shows two typical solutions for very flexible (Gratomat) or highly precise chamfers (ChamferCut).

The part on generating grinding starts with on overview on various dressing options for the grinding worm. Thereafter, application examples for generating grinding of collision critical gears which are normally profile ground are given. Finally, the latest options for topological modifications like DFT or GER as well as superfinishing are presented.

Dr. Oliver Winkel is Head of Application Technology at Liebherr-Verzahntechnik GmbH (LVT). He joined LVT in 2004 on track of a technology and applications expert for gear hobbing processes. Educated at RWTH Aachen, where he obtained a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, he chairs research working groups for gear production at FVA e.V. and VDW e.V. (the German machine tool builders’ association).
