Touch probes from HEIDENHAIN are used to calibrate robots in high-accuracy applications

HEIDENHAIN solutions are turning automation on its head, literally. Our new user report describes how IMSTec, a company specializing in automation technology, faced the challenge of fully automating a production system for high-precision needles used in medical single-use applicators. To keep the system’s robots accurate, IMSTec employs an iMS robotics calibration tool from ITG Innovative Technologies, featuring a HEIDENHAIN TS 150 touch probe.
Suspended from a machine-tool spindle, the TS 150 normally whizzes around machine envelopes at probing speeds of up to 3,000 mm/min. But the innovators at ITG have turned this principle on its head, deploying the TS 150 as a stationary, upward-pointing probe for calibrating robots in high-accuracy applications.
“The versatility of the iMS measuring system and the tactile probing capabilities of the HEIDENHAIN touch probe deliver clear benefits for machine builders and users, enabling fully automated calibration for entire robot cells and achieving a level of reproducible accuracy not possible with optical systems,” says Martin Lock from ITG Innovative Technologies GmbH.
