    90 degree thread?????

    Hey

I have had a few prints come in from a customer but they have a 90 degree thread. I have talked to my tooling reps and neither have come across this or have threading inserts that are 90 degree. Has any one seen this before or can point me in the right direction?

Very nice of them to go with a 90 degree instead of the standard 60! I have ran into this a few times, we usually use a Single Point Threading Bar to get it done. Here is the top in standard option we'd go with:

    3/8" Shank x 3/16" Width x 90 Degree Included Angle External Thread/Chamfer Bar:

Also, if you need a way to hold the 3/8" Shank to do a OD Thread then there would be Square Shank Holders for a 3/8" Round Bar so you can easily get them on centerline in the lathe:

1" Square Shank x 3/8" ID Holder for Above Bar:

3/4" Square Shank x 3/8" ID Holder for Above Bar:

The only other option you could go with is to look into modifying a Top Notch Grooving Insert to a 90 Degree Point. We have done these to different odd angles many times.

    Hopefully this helps!

Thanks for the info. unfortunately the threads are internal and 90 degrees? Do you happen to have any suggestions or seen this before?

Haha, it's never that easy! The only option would be an ID Chamfer Tool, it would be 90 degree and would work great to create the 90 degree threads with light passes. What is the Min Bore/Depth you need? I'll send over info!

    Thanks!

Sounds great! Here are links to the indexable 90 Degree ID Chamfer Tool we would recommend to do the 90 degree threads. The only issue I'm seeing is the indexable system has a .008" flat and the print calls out a R.0157" Max, would the flat be ok? Also, I see it is a 5/32" pitch but with the .0157" Radius the .140" width of the insert should work.

    .500" Min Bore x .140" Width x 90 Degree ID Chamfer Insert:

1/2" Shank x 1" Reach x 2.800" OAL Steel Coolant Thru Holder (also available in 5/8" Steel and Carbide is available as well for deeper bores):

Not the easiest application. A Modified Top Notch could still be a good option, especially at the 1.320" Bore Diameter.

    Hopefully this helps!
