Serial Port Dongle on a Laptop?

Has anyone had success using an old serial port key on a PC without a serial port?
Been trying with a USB adapter with no luck.
Apparently I don't know anything, so please verify my suggestions with my wife.

It's a 10 year old hardware key that goes on the serial port. I don't have anything on it besides that, I transfer programs on a flash drive.
    I'm running Gibbs 2006 version 8.2
I just want to update my PC to a decent laptop, but I'm being told it won't be able to see the key. I've updated the driver for the key and it works on 2 different PCs.
I'm looking for anyone who has done it or heard of it being done before.
Apparently I don't know anything, so please verify my suggestions with my wife.

To use a serial dongle on a laptop without a serial port, try installing the USB-to-serial converter driver and checking in Device Manager to see if it is recognized. If it doesn't work, try changing the COM port or using a terminal to test the connection.

The electronic file option sounds promising. Did you go through SafeNet or some other third party to convert your hardware key? I'm a bit hesitant to send mine off anywhere since it's kind of critical for my workflow. stickman hook
