If I bring in a part into soldworks and the model is not in the right orientation for machine how do I "translate" it into the correct orientation? So I have the model in the right Z position.

I guess I would have to say --After you bring the model into SW
you can rotate it to the position you want to machine it--
then in SW create your own coordinate system on the model
to suite your needs---

Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish.
If it is only for machining purposes then that is done in stock wizard. Once you open up your part go to your BobCam tab, right click on "milling stock" and Stock Wizard. The second page is "Machine Setup" and you will see the origin box. Highlight that box and click the corner you want the origin to be. Down from that is the x,y,z orientation boxes that allow you to flip the origin around to the correct direction.

I set my coordinate but when I set my stock it only using the SW origin how do I fix that?
So in the pic the stock is using the SW origin and I did create a new reference coordinate but it's been ignored.
Follow the instructions Forrest C gave-- If you created your own coordinate
system --scroll down a little farther and you will see where it says
Pick from existing UCS high lite this box and then pick the new coordinate--
then to verify you have got it right --when you get back into the bob cam tree right click
"machine setup" the origin should light up
Set your origin first and then go set your stock
Rick
Sometimes when you are setting your stock the SW origin
will show up--don't pay any attention to it set your origin
set your stock--then right click Machine setup to verify--

I have 2014 and don't see that option in that tutorial.
I lost you---what are you saying??
Rick
I have no option to move my origin under feature to move or scale..... I'm opening igs files, not parts that were drawn in SW.
Ok--I am using 2013 SW with Bobcam V3
What are you working with---
I just opened up an IGS file--rotated it where I wanted the origin to be
and made a new coordinate system on it---is this what you want to do??
Yes look like the move/copy option was hidden I had to customize the menu so now I have the option so working on doing it now.
Do you want an origin for machining purposes? In your BobCam tree you will see the "milling stock" tab. Right click and select "stock wizard". As soon as you do this it will create a generic stock the size of your part. You can alter the stock dimensions further but that's another thread. Next click on the little arrow just under the ? for the help menu. Once you do this you will see a transparent wire frame around your stock and it will take you to the "machine setup" page. In this area highlight the "origin" box and then hover over a corner of your stock or part that you want the origin closest to. You can then change the orientation by highlighting the x,y or z box and selecting a line that you want that axis to align with. There are other options to offset the origin by certain amounts.
I wish I knew how to make videos.

Ok I can't figure this out, All I want to do is move the origin from the center of the part to the top corner, because no matter what I do my material stock follows that origin that is set by SW.
I have the instruction videos but still no joy, seams I'm missing something.
This issue is only when I draw a sketch representing the material of the part, if i just use the BC material calculation I don't have a problem.
I have done what you have describe but the material still follows the "origin" not what I have set in BC.
Forrest C--
is there a way to follow this conversation in real time
instead of having to jump in and out???
