    spindle won't start

    hello
    i have a milltronics partner I
serial#1772-901 with a centurian 5 controller on it
the spindle will not start on it
i put in a spindle speed in mdi (like m3s500)
hit cycle start and spindle will not start
sounds like the switches are doing something in the
    electronics box but nothing happens
i have had the machine for 3 years and use it about once a week
any suggestions would help!i need this machine running again
    thanks ,russ

I can think of one of four things:

    (1) The motor controller is not receiving the signal to start from the card cage.
    (2) The motor controller is not receiving the speed from the card cage, and assuming zero.
    (3) The motor controller is damaged.
    (4) The motor is damaged.

    So, a few questions:

    (1) Does the motor turn on in reverse? If so, it would lead me to believe it is not receiving signal from the card cage for forward (with the Partner 1 I have helped out, forward and reverse are two different signals).

    (2) Do you have enough electrical experience to work in a "hot" environment? Because if not, you need to call someone. My next areas would be checking signals using a DMM to make sure the motor controller is getting signals. In the controller, Pin 1 to ground should read 24 VDC when the machine is not rotating "forward", and should read 0 VDC when it is. Similarly, pin 2 should read 24 VDC to ground when the machine is not spinning in "reverse", and 0 VDC when it is.

Above and beyond that, I do not know how to test the motor controller or the motor.

Does this machine have a float level spindle inhibitor switch on the way lub , that when the level in the container is at a low, the spindle will not turn on?

I guess you haven't overlooked the obvious in that the speed switch hasn't been turned down to zero. Been there done that.

If it has a tool changer , do a M6T1 , and see if it rotates the spindle to orient .
Make sure the air is connected .

    spindle spped

Open the electrical cabinnet. Give the spindle a command from the MDI line. S1000M3, Look at the spindle drive and see if it is displaying a frequency, IE: 30hz. If so then the control is telling the spindle drive to run. If not then either the spindle over rideswitch is set to 0, check the display for the % over ride setting. or the spindle analog voltage is not getting to the drive.
On your machine serial # the spindle analog is derived from the front panel keyboard encoder card. You can check at the spindle drive for a "analog voltage" ( 0 to 10vdc) at 1000rpm you should see about ~ 2.0vdc if not start back tracking to the Key board encoder card.

As a test try connecting a battery ( AA is Ok to the spindle drive analog voltage, If it runs then the drive is OK.
