    12 point nuts

Guys, ive been searching for 2-3weeks now non-stop. Im trying to locate drawings for 12 point flange head non-locking nuts. 1/2-20 thread and 5/8-18. Also, how do the captured washers work with these? I want to make some 12 point 5/8-18 aluminum nuts with stainless washers.
Also, would 6262-T9 be better for making nuts compared to 7075 or 6061? Im gonna have them hard anodized once finished.

    Hello Aaron,

I don't know about the 12 point nuts but 7075 is stronger than 6061

I will look in the machinery's handbook for the 12 pointers

LOL, what was I thinking Usually 12 points refers to a box wrench. 12 points gives you more positions/angles to loosen or tighten a nut.

I have never heard of a 12 point nut, but they might exist.

12pt nuts are big in the racing and aerospace world. I emailed BG, and they said my order was too small (200pcs) They must deal with massive orders like1,000+ minimum or something. I might just have to have these machined. The thing is, I dont know what corner radius to put in between the points or what angle the base of the 12 point is where it goes into the flange part. At my old job, I milled a ton of 12 point wrench ends on these MP-35N parts, but I cant remember the radius of the tool to put the finish on the 12 point crown.

I just spoke to my old boss and he said that it was a 1/32" endmill that we used to put the finish on those parts. So a .01625" radius in the corner.

    Depends on the application

You know the enviroment my parts are in. Is Hard coat anodize better or worse that titanium nitrate, or black nitrate? Im still trying to learn my coatings. Ive heard that the hard coat anodizing can make the surface of the nuts as hard as some milder steels.

Im also trying to figure out how they make the washers captive on these nuts. Ive seen on some 12 point nuts that they have a captive stainless, or aluminum washer on a steel nut body. How does that washer snap into the nut face?

I would think they are flanged, staked, or stamped. I really don't know.

Hi - nice job. It seems like you would not be the only one who needs something like this. If they are really that hard to get, maybe you should make a few more and sell them.

Ive allready sold 150 of the aluminum nuts and have had to order more from the machine shop. Nice little niche market.

Whoa - aluminium wheel nuts! Personally speaking, and not being an engineer - I wouldn't use those in any load bearing or safety critical area!
and wheels are pretty safety critical! :nono: IMHO
