Red face BF20 Low Speed Gear Broken...doh

My new mill and I had some "words" tonight...

Any fellow BF20 users that have done this? I have not got a price yet of the replacement but I think I will get 2 (if they are not to expensive). At least High speed still works.

My high speed pulses when running below 2000rpm. is this common?

I will check mine in the morning and let you know...by pulse you mean the speed varies or you just hear it "pulsing"?

I just got a reply from Machine Tools Warehouse (who I bought it from) and they have been great. Trying to get me a new gear free of charge. I must say they have been really great to deal with.

WOW, id say thats not normal, I have the G0704 but mine stays pretty much rock steady at any range...maybe some controller tuning needed?

I think that is the acceleration pot on the board. When my controller died on mine and I tried to adjust the replacement I couldn't find a happy setting where it didn't do just that. I ended up sending my whole head back because we could not walk through it and fix it on the phone. Hope you have better luck. Nice to hear that they are going to fix your gear for you though.

Ouch - I've done that twice on my BF30 clone - the first time did actually shatter a 20mm endmill though, so I would have expected something to break!

Has that motor pulsing started since you broke low-gear, or has it always been there?

I would be very careful about twiddling the driver board pots - I destroyed my motor trying to fix a similar problem (motor speeding up during heavy cuts) and there's plenty of scope for electrocuting yourself while you're at it.

    Good Luck!

Sounds like your IR compensation is off on the motor control board.

The IR pot was the problem. I got the video of the pulse sent right to the factory and they sent me instructions on how to correct this. The machine now runs +- 10rpm steady.

Well I got my new gears in. The company I bought my mill from (Machine Tools Warehouse) shipped me 2 free of charge (Customer service is top notch)

Anyway the swap out was not to hard at all. The one thing that I HIGHLY recommend is to make up a bearing drift punch to push the top bearing back in place during the re-assembly. It was a bit of a bear getting it back in.

I made a vid to help anyone else getting ready to tackle this. Hope it can help.
