Start >> Run >> type "Command" and you enter the Dos-box
Ok thats great thanks. Now how do I or can I download something from internet
to dos or how do I extract a file from my A drive or my C drive would rather use my A drive I think.
Your drives are the same, whether viewed from Dos or Windows. You have to extract a file, so you also need the program to extract it (like Winzip). Download your file to a convenient place, like the Desktop. Double-clicking it should start your extracting program, extract it to your drive (and folder) of choice.
In following order:
1. Download to desired directory from Internet using Win(whatever)
2. Unzip while in Win(whatever0 into whatever directory you want/need it to go
3. EIther exit to DOS or run program in DOS window from Win (whatever)
3. NOTE: if you have a Win (whatever) above Win 98SE, some DOS programs don't work so well or at all. Heard reports that som DOS progs won't work at all in XP.
Suggestion: if you have enough DOS stuff to justify the expense, setup a DOS box and use it accordingly/exclusively for legacy software. YOu can dual boot into dos or win98Se and it works fine - can also do this with Win 3x, Win 95 and 95a (modified 3x).
HOWEVER, we've seen some dos stuff that runs on win3x but crashed after upgrade to 95a.
The computer and software companies really seem as though they would like the old legacy stuff to just go away - this is why so much stuff is NOT backwards/legacy compatible.
