    Help choosing lathe

At the outset, let me say I am a total Newbie. I need to learn lathe technique as I intend to use it in my auto restoration hobby, and because it looks like fun!

So, I bought the MikroMark 8 x 14. I am very frustrated with it (perhaps its me!), I worked really hard at getting the slop out, but it still seems very impresice to me. I bought carboin insert typle tools, adjustable tool holders etc to try optimise things. On a 8 inch long, 1/2 inch brass rod I get a lot of chatter. THe pice does not seem to want to stay truw in the chuck. It just does not seem very sturdy to me.

So, perhaps I need a different machine. Hows the Lathemaster 9x30? ANyone have experience or opiniopn on it?

    Many thanks

    Danni,

I went to look at the MicroMark lathe (7x14).
Are you using the tailstock center to help steady the workpiece?
Carbon tools wear quickly. I use HSS (High speed steel) tools or a carbide (insert or brazed) tools.

I have the Lathemaster 8x14, which is the little brother to the 9x30. I like mine just fine and it weighs twice as much as the 7x machines.
What I have read about the 9x30's: Everyone has good things to say about it. There is a Lathemaster Yahoo group where you might find more info on them.

It sounds to me like either you are turning too long a piece unsupported, or your saddle, cross and compound gibs are not properly adjusted.

Softer metals have to be turned down at slower speeds. This sounds like a small lathe for auto restoring.
Make sure you clean my wrench before you put it back into my toolbox.

you need to support the rod with the tailstock after making a center drill in it.

use positive carbide inserts with small corner radius.

work in hi spindle speed and small chips depth.
