    SX3 high speed pulley ???

I can't ever get any return e-mails from Syil America (Richard) so I have decided to build my own high speed setup on the Sx3 I have.

Does anyone know the pulley info and the belt size that replaces the original. I know that Neil has one but I though maybe someone has documented what the sizes are on the belt and toothed pulley for the motor side.

I'm guessing it is a 1:1 pulley and matches the spindle pulley, but I want to be sure.

    Thanks
    Chris

Hi Chris! I would guess that also. I can't WAIT to see what you come up with. We sure need it.

I replaced the spindle bearings recently and the loads and rpm ratings on the lowest one was 10k. If I can get this info, I plan to take this to 6k or so. I think maybe Pizzamker has already done this with his. Maybe he can give us some guidance.

Wow! Can you give part numbers and source for those bearings please?

Here is the post with the Bearing numbers, I used these to purchase what I have.

Oddly, during my search for the spindle bearings, I also found someones pic of the upgraded speed pulley.

    It is here.

Thanks! So, did you get the regular bearings or the $127 angular contact bearings?

I did the whole thing. Honestly though, the press fit back into the shaft took a lot more effort than I had hoped. I used a hydraulic press to get the shaft back in to where it was, and it didn't go in easy.

I packed the bearings with high temp bearing grease and it did seem to help.

also, I had to use the original race at the spindle, there is no way to get that out of the shaft housing. Not without major destruction. That in my opinion was a bad (read Throwaway) design.

I have started the build on the pulley and High speed mod.

I am using Aluminum round stock for it. I had some 3.5" 6061 that needed a purpose anyway. I will post a cad file of the pulley and the details of the belt, etc once I make sure all specs are correct.

I got the bare stock turned down and bored for the shaft. All I like now is to cut the grooves on the sides and then broach the keyway. Then it is 3x00 RPM..... (well, as soon as the longer belt comes in. lol!)

I do know that the belt is a 5mm pitch and that the pulley has 45 grooves. Measurements indicate that the new belt is going to be a 95 tooth belt. We will see when it gets here.

Now that I finally got my 4th axis finished a couple of days ago, this will be a good test for it. The real fun begins.

Original belt is a 5MM pitch, 20mm wide, 400series 80 tooth belt for reference.

Earlier this year I purchased the pulley speed upgrade kit from Syil for the SX3. I had to; I think I looked everywhere, and could not find a 'stock' pulley for this application (bore/tooth spacing). It is amazing how these 'mass production' machines never seem to employ mass produced parts! Seems like maybe they had a deal on 100K spindle motors, except they were some random shaft OD and key width, etc, so they figured- cheaper to run some pulleys than to retail the motors...

Anyway, it is a great upgrade if you are using 1/4"-3/8" cutters in Aluminum or similar. It is still slow for 1/8" cutters, or higher speed maching with carbide cutters, etc.

If you need some data/pics, let me know. Strange, I had recently written to Richard at Syil, and never heard back either. I hope things are OK with him.

    Regards,

This is the $300 upgrade? what all do you get for the money? Does this allow control of spindle speed down to zero by Mach3?

No, it is a little under $100. All it does is replace the motor shaft pulley and belt that is on the stock SX3.

    Regards,

I hope all is well with him also. I had sent him at least a couple of e-mails asking to buy something from him. I know the shock was at least 3 e-mails. I was ready to buy the speed upgrade kit and also the factory shock lift. I just needed payment info.

Instead I wound up making the counter weight and now the Spindle pulley because I couldn't get a response. I would say that it could have been filtered by spam, but there were also 2 PMs from this board to him that went un-answered.

Oh well, I gave my money to someone else.

I think that Syil should have contacted Little Machine shop as a retailer. I think he could really move some products for them. It would be a one stop shop for parts and machines. That would be great.

Well, I finally got some time to work on the pulley in the shop. And it has been a while since I posted any pics of my enclosure I made out of fiberglass, wood and epoxy.

I have had very little time for the front doors yet. But for now, I just set a sheet of lexan on the inside and lean it forward. I can still get in and out easy enough. So far, not any leaking other then a crack in some bondo that shrunk a bit. filled in the gaps and need to coat it a little more and I am done.

I also got my electrical enclosure for the rest of the components. It is a 20x20x8 and the board all of the cnc gear is on is 17x17, so I am golden there. Where it is now, there isn't anything that can get to it because it is recessed 6" from the edge, but moving them to the new box is next on the list to be done. You can't tell by the pictures, but at the front of the opening on the bottom, there is a 2" high arc that feed all liquids and swarf back into the basin.

The shop is kind of a mess right now. I am getting the new one built right now and will be moving things out of my way soon. Leaving plenty of CNC room.

After getting a couple of the wrong size belts, here is the final result. The belt fits that I got from Polytech.com. Below is the part number and price.

    1 B460-5M-15BNG 460-5m-15 Rubber Timing Belt $8.17

The pulley is 2.775 diameter with 45 grooves. (That's groove every 8 degrees) The bit was 1/8" ball nose mill cutting a total of .090 deep in steps. Then chamfering the edges for the belt clearance.

And I have to say that I am very impressed with my camera. Both shots were with the mill running full speed, yet you couldn't tell. It looks stone cold dead in the photo. It is a Sony DSC-H5 for reference.

Here are the pictorial results. I will get that cad file up now that I have tested it and it is working as it should. I will also shave .150 of the bottom of the spindle to remove the added height. ( I simply forgot to do that since I split the project up over several days.) Besides, this is just testing. Now, the next step is to get higher rpms.
