    Many types for different applications.

Cutting Oil = Usually a petroleum base, rather heavy, and has sulfur additives. Mostly used for heavy duty machining such as threading/tapping. Some is still used in gear cutting. In lighter form still used in grinding, particularly in gear grinding.

Water soluble oil = an oil treated to be mixed with water. Mostly replaced by synthetic and semi-synthetic coolants. Used in various concentrations for nearly any machining.

Synthetic coolants = man made chemicals usually mixed with water. They are developed for many different applications. Synthetics are most often formulated with water soluble oil to produce semi-synthetic coolants with many applications.

Water soluble vegetable oils can be used for the same functions as above when formulated for application(s).

Some concentrated vegetable oils are used with air to produce a mist or "near-dry" coolant.

Your best information source is probably the coolant mfg/vendors.

Semi-synthetic metalworking fluids are usually pretty versatile. They have up to 30% oil and are 100% soluble in water. I would try this type of product first.
