I wondered whether someone knew the voltage rating and max RPM of the motor in a Powertrek TX4000 treadmill. (I haven't actually got hold of this motor yet, and apparently the one I might get has lost its plate anyway.)

I've been unable to find this info on the web, or even find who manufactures the treadmill, let alone the motor.

It's supposed to run at 3.0HP continuous-duty and 3.5HP peak.

Take claimed HP ratings of Treadmill motors with a pinch of salt!
The majority of DC brushed motors are limited to 2k-2.5k rpm tops.
For the voltage rating assuming this rpm limit, back feed the motor at a known rpm and measure the generated DC and pro rate it for the estimated max rpm.
The other way is to feed it with a known DC and measure the RPM.

most TM motors are in the 2500 RPM bracket and are usually 180v DC.

I wouldn't go looking for specs as its like looking for a needle in a haystack because it will be of Chinese import as most are.

The quality TM motors to look for are Baldor, Leeson, Nordic Trak, to name a few.
Others may be uni-directional, (offset brushes).

Thanks Al and Henry. If I get this motor (I'm not into CNC - I'm planning to build a wind turbine - someone told me you guys often use TM motors) and it's unidirectional, will it be obvious which direction is the right one? I haven't got the equipment to measure RPM, although can chuck the motor up in a drill and measure voltage.

180V and 2500 RPM would be fine, suggesting ~190RPM for the 13.5V needed to start charging 12V batteries. I'm told the relation strays from the linear, so maybe that'll be 170-180RPM, which I'll easily get given my windy location

I was suspecting the RPM figures stated for some TMs were a bit iffy. This TM is supposed to run at up to 18km/h, i.e. 5m/s, which at 4000RPM gives a roller radius of 2.3cm. I've never seen a TM up close, but I'd guess the radius is larger than that, so either the 4000RPM is not achieved or the max running speed is faster than quoted, which seems doubtful.

Usually they state on the motor plate the direction, but you can also tell from the brushes, the offset side is the direction of rotation to.
