We went back to BobCAD for V23. Bosses decision, not mine. Was given the advice to upgrade video and memory. Did both.

Windows XP Pro on a Dell Dimension E520, Pentium D 2.8 Ghz, Nvidia e-GeForce 8400 GS

My question: Dell said motherboard would max at 4 GB, 1 GB stick in all 4 slots. After doing this, windows only recognizes 3 GB because it is a 32 bit system. Did not know that tidbit before purchasing max amount of RAM. Will leaving all 4 GB installed adversely affect the performance of the computer?

It sure doesn't seem to have helped. Went from 512 MB to 4 GB. Should have been some improvement.

No, the RAM will not adversely affect the operation of the computer or software.

As for not seeing an improvement in the software, what issues were you trying to handle with the system upgrade?

I do know that there is an updated driver for your graphics card on the NVidia website, released last week, unless your card was purchased from Dell with the computer. The driver update should help some as well.

I saw the other posts and updated the driver after install on 1/12/09.

It just seems to have a "lag". Sometimes it takes 25-30 seconds to load BCC. I would have thought it should be quicker now. It lags on operations every now and then. Just enough to break the good rhythym of drawing and programming. I just thought it would go away now. Went from 512 MB RAM to 4 GB. Even at the 3 GB windows recognizes, I would have thought it should have increased speed.

The boss has some schmuck he brings in to handle his IT. Everytime he touches anything it all goes to hell, so I am trying other avenues for help now. Any ideas on what I can look for or "tweak"?

There are a couple of things that you may want to try:

1. Increasing the Virtual memory on the computer. Normally windows handles this, but I have found that setting it manually give more control and you can go beyond the windows default setting.

2. Also, check the msconfig and see what you have starting up with the computer. It could be a process in the background causing the lag.

I will post more as I think of them, but these are the first that come to mind.

My bet it is related to a virus scanner.

What anti-virus software do you have? Other anti-spam, anti-malware, etc. will also cause momentary time lapses on the system. Nothing will work for several secs or a minute then back to normal.

Other things to check

Networking lag> If your file/system is on the network then another system could be causing this from pinging yuor system.

Also check your auto save settings. A delay, especially on slower drives, will be seen when it autosaves.

And one more is a backup utility. If you are using a backup program it will cause delays when reading/writing to the system.

Never mind on the help. Was just informed the bosses IT schmuck monitors the computers from remote location. Ever since that was set-up all systems in office and engineering have run like crap. Sorry to waste your time. Don't know what he is monitoring, it is common knowledge the guys at night listen to sports and watch porn. Nothing happening to them yet. Only been 7 months of monitoring. Wonder what the hold up is?

The same stuff happened here at night. But then again the guy running night shift was the owner's son-in-law so who could do anything.

Things are slow so they moved to day shift and layed off the ones that worked to keep the porn watching. I guess I will be glad to stay on OT to remove and get the system up and running again after the virus attacks.
