Bridgeport 1st gen EZ-trak connection problem

Our shop has a very early Ez-trak, probably 1st generation, CNC mill that is only 2 axis, LED readouts and the only interface outside of the machine is a RS232 connection. I have tried to connect using a standard parallel to usb adapter and Bobcad, but keep getting a "connection failed" error message. Could I be using the wrong cable or the wrong DNC settings? Anyone else had success connecting to this old machine, and sending or receiving code?

This is actually a control made by Southwestern Industries in California.
It has RS232 capability but not DNC. Check with them.
I have yet to have success with a USB to Rs232 adapter. I have heard of people having some success with a PCMCIA adapter to RS232.

I have an older laptop with a parallel port. Do you think I could I use that, and would I need a null modem adapter in-line?

Parallel port is for a printer. This control needs a serial port.
