    Long Motors on EBAY ??

    Hello ,
Has anyone have an opinion on the products from Long Motors?
I was interested in buying this kit:

    3 Axis Nema 23 stepper motor 425oz.in & Driver & Power - eBay (item 270684208014 end time Jan-24-11 05:24:58 PST)

This will be my 1st build , so I am trying to find something not to expensive , but that will work fairly well..

    Thanks

Sorry, for getting back such an old thread.

But I'm in the same situation of the previous user.
Do anyone have a reference or review for that equipment ?

I just purchased that kit. And I come to find that the motors are have a very high inductance 6.8mH which is optimal for an 83VDC power supply not a 36VDC power supply. Additionally the drivers take a max of 50VDC so you can't even get a bigger power supply to match the motors.

That said I am being told to just go a head with what I've got as it should work. Just not opimally.

Thank you for your answer, since this is going to be mi first CNC and my budged is limited, I think will be a great project 1.0

Maybe one day I'll upgrade the kit to gecko driver's....

In Costa Rica we have popular idiom "BBB" "Bueno, bonito. barato" (Good, nice, cheaper)

I've been using this exact kit for quite a while now. Here's a quick review of the kit.
    a. The drivers are exact replicas of the Probotix Mondostep drivers (!). They work well; just remember that like the Mondostep drivers, they can't use full steps (you have to use microstepping).
    b. The power supply is pretty hefty, and has yet to fail on me.
    c. The motors suffer from very bad resonance problems. It stalls out easily at ~360 RPM, and adding dampers is hard since the motors aren't dual shaft.

I don't know if the resonance problems stem from the motors or the drivers, but I do know that there is a lot of it! I would advise going for their 280 oz-in kit instead if you plan on using leadscrews.

Edit: Keep in mind that most ebay drivers are exactly the same- just with different branding.

I also just finished a build using a Long's motor kit. Got it within 3 days of ordering (shipped from USA). Very well packaged and everything worked out of the box. They don't provide any documentation with the kit, but it's all available online and was enough for me to wire everything up. I'm too new at this to speak to the resonance issues. They do get noisy but -- if configure the motors correctly using the driver DIP switches and your software -- they work just fine. Any questions I had were promptly and very politely answered via email to China. Price, for me, was a major deciding factor. Building a CNC was not in my budget, so I had to do it on a shoestring. At around $330 for the motor/driver/breakout board kit I was able to get started. You can see my finished machine on another thread.

I also got this kit a few months back and picked up resonance issues around 500 rpm. I eventually changed out the Chinese drives for a G540 Geckodrive and now I can drive right up to 1500rpm without any issues. I've also changed the 36V switched mode PSUs for a proper Linear Toroid 48V PSU. Clearly no thought went into putting that kit together!

I know the motors are high inductance and aren't running optimally, but it works really well as it is and I'm getting rapids of 7m/m. Point is, stay away from the Chinese drives and get a Gecko drive. And if you can get the Keling 380oz motors its even better.

I just bought this kit. I have ran Haas mills and lathe but this is my first attempt doing it at home.

3Axis Nema 34 Spindle Shaft & Nema23 Stepper Motor CNC, search it on eBay.

I know nothing of electronics to speak of but I look forward to this challenge.

I bought the 425oz kit from them on eBay and I'm very pleased so far. My machine is 4'x5' and I have two motors on the y axis and everything works great. I think mine are 36v. And good up to 48v but I'm scared to change the power supply when it works good to begin with
