Joe's Hybrid 4x4 and CNCrouterparts kits

    Hi Guy's,

I am planning on building a 4x4 router am looking for advice/opinions on the relative differences between Joe's Hybrid with R&P and CNCrouterparts 4x4 kit.

Initially, I want to build a 4x4 machine, but would like to be able to modify it later to 4x8.

So far, I like what I have read about both machines - but find it a little hard to tell what advantages either design has over the other. Sort of a bang for the buck type question.

    Thank you for any input.

I can't comment on joes, but I really like my cnc router parts machine. The r&p rocks either way u go I'd say do r&p. CRP's would be easy to expand to 4x8 just buy new 1545 x rails, cold rolled steel, cross supports and brackets. That said you could most likely do the same with the joes

When I was looking it appeared that the joes would be cheaper to build but more time to build it.

As someone who has built 2 Joes Hybrids I agree that R&P is the only way to go no matter which one you decide to build. Also the Hybrid can be built 8x4 simply by increasing the rail and base lenght. Quite a few 8x4's have been built.
I'm first to admit haven't really looked very hard at the CNCRouterparts design but one thing I do note is that it uses skate bearings while the Joes uses V Bearings. V Bearings are very simple and more important they are self cleaning. You don't get a build up of fine dust on a V rail since it simply slides off. I imagine a large flat rail would be somewhere for dust to settle unless some sort of cleaner is installed.
The Joe's website offer support for builders to answer questions and offer advice on their build. Members help to solve running issues and members showcase and share their projects so when the build is over the forum remains relevant.
You can choose from the standard Joes R&P MDF build through to the Cast Aluminum machine depending on your budget and requirements.
There is no kit of hardware to build the machine though you can buy the MDF Carriage kit from Joe or Cast kit from Harry. (CastCNC - Home) You need to source the bearings bolts rails etc yourself, but that is half the fun in my opinion.
Both machines use R&P kits from CNCRouterparts so the drive mechanism are similar.

All the best with which every you decide to build.

    Cheers

I'd say based on the builds I'vev seen both are more than capable machines, the CNCRP more of a bolt-together silution (unless you buy a Joe's kit...)
