If you know someone attending a Technical College, they usually are allowed to purchase last years version for 10¢ on the dollar from AutoCad. Thats how I got my first version. It did not have manuals. but it was a full-blown version.
I still have it around somewhere, but that was back in the DOS version days.

I doubt you'll get any takers, since it would be illegal, unless they actually "gave" you their copy and stopped using it themselves.
I'd recommend learning a similar CAD program. I started with DesignCAD way back when it was version 2 or 3. When our company started using AutoCAD, the switch was relatively painless; it only took a few days to get the hang of using AutoCAD. You'll find that most 2D type CAD programs all have basicaly the same commands, and going from one to another isn't that difficult. One thing about AutoCAD, though, is that there is so much it can do you'll still be learning it after many, many years of using it.

I took an auto-cad class at the local vot-tech adult night class but I bet your local school will not have a class untill fall
You could try http://students.autodesk.com where you can download Autodesk Inventor for free.
Why not try progecad or A9cad
http://www.progecad.com
www.a9tech.com
Both are free and Progecad is similar to Autocad
