cleaning / restoring a spindle taper

so I have an old machine that's been sitting for 6 or 7 years (2 in my shop). just got it up and running and repairing some bits. the spindle taper is good, but has small amounts of surface tarnish.

obviously scotchbrite may affect the tolerance / fit of the taper, so is there an accepted easy way of getting this taper into shiny new-like condition, or at least safe to use condition?

its an ISO40 taper - same as CAT40 (MAHO).

Scotchbrite is fine if you use the white or grey ( ultra fine/fine) with some kerosine/velocite 6 or something. Won't hurt it a bit.

on closer inspection most of the tarnish is in a recessed parts of the taper. the 2 contact patches (front and back) are pretty clean.

ill try some fine scotchbrite then and remove those couple of spots.

    thanks
