Smile Electrical Wiring HELP NEEDED!!! Noob question

    Hi Everyone,

I found a old cnc machine in my mates garage. His dad bought it from china about 5year ago. The intention was to use it for their sign writing business.
Long story short I've purchase a new DSP controller. I'm in the process of swapping over the wires into the new board. It looks it would be a straight swap over.

My concern is with the wiring diagram I received with the kit.
Its state that I cannot plug the ground(black wire) into the shielding hole, but the old board has it in that same hole.
    I'm conflicted at the moment

Can someone please advise me on what is correct.

    OLD PCB BOARD
    Attachment 236406

    NEW PCB BOARD
    Attachment 236408

    Much Appreciated

It's a little odd, but I can kind of understand what they're getting at. The schematic in the 3rd pic shows that ground for the driver boards comes from the motor power supply, with the idea that it has the same ground as the "main" 5v supply. Their concern is that if you used the shield connection, and the ground wire from the motor supply came loose, the high current driving the motor would come back through that shield connection.

If you're sure the motor supply ground connection is solid, using the shield connection for ground should be fine,

Thanks for the response RussellK. So can I wire the new board the same way the old one is wired? As long as the wires dont fall out.

You mighy have to put in super layman's term for me. :s

Pretty much. There is one difference between the new board and old, though. The old board has what I assume to be a 5V supply to a connector on the top right of the board. On the new board that point is unpopulated. Instead they've got a 40 VDC (or whatever the motors use) input in the bottom left corner which then gets stepped-down to 5V to power the board logic. Note that this does not match the schematic.

This means the existing 5V power supply is no longer needed, and you'll need to run ground and power from your motor supply to the connector on the bottom left.

    Thank RussellK

I thinks it done. What do you think? Do you see any potential issues?

Should the x y and z wires be identical? The blue and yellow wires seem they are not match up?

It's impossible to say what colours go where without seeing how the wires connect to the controllers at the other end (ie. which colours are ground, dir, pulse and 5v).
