Conversational, what did I do wrong, tool offset related I think?

I ran my 1st part last night, it was the PCNC milled in a piece of wood.

After I loaded all my tools in the ATC, I made the profile>saved>made the engraving(with different tool)>amend to file

When the program ran, the tool for the profile was easily 5 inches too high and doing nothing but cutting air.

The second tool engraved the fonts perfectly.

When I did the profile by itself the tool went to the proper location and cut the wood.

    Thanks,

    Mike

    1100 PCNC with ATC
    Mega InTurn™ (on order!)

This isn't consistent. Yes, maybe offsets, maybe coordinates, but look at your g code too.

To check an offset. Put tool in spindle, enter tool number in DRO, run it down to the work manually. Z axis should show zero or close. If not, either the spindle isn't referenced or the tooltable offset is wrong.

I screwed up the tool table and how I was (or not using) a master tool offset such as Tool 1, now will be using my Haimer 3D taster for T1 (not keeping it in the ATC!)

So far so good and the few Conversational programs I made worked correctly.

    Thanks

    Couple other things I do.

I add 2" to tools temporarily when I first test a program. That makes the machine cut air the first time, and it's easy to reset the tool table correctly. You didn't make a mistake, you learned a useful technique!

I've got a block of Al with a couple magnets pressed in (and a pocket for the collet) that sticks to the spindle. With a known length, it's a quick way to set T0 to just about the right length, and then when I mount my first tool I check with cigarette paper and reset the DRO to get a good zero.

I keep a 6-in rule in my pocket, start a new program in single block mode, and check the tool offset with the rule after each tool change. That's save me a bunch of grief over the years.

Ditto on the ruler. 3R style.

Don't buy just one. They wander.
