7075-T6 aluminum machining and dimensional distortions

Residual stresses after machining is the problem for reaching to close tolerances on this material. I'm eagerly listening to your suggestions for making accurate parts. Any heat treatment for stress relief should be done?

Back years ago, I worked at Boeing. We would rough the part +0.100" then fly cut the indexing surfaces flat.

Next, we machined to +0.030" and then fly cut the mounting surfaces.

Finally the net cuts were completed and the top and bottom was machined net.

The shop I worked in was Flight Test support and we primarily did one off parts.

7075 does tend to warp. Lots of coolant is your friend.

    Cheers,

    Dave

What kind of fixtures do you recommend for minimal stress? Toe clamp?
