    which design do you recommend?

I'm interested in building a cnc machine for woodworking projects. Probably some carving and even cutout. I have lots of woodworking experience and tools but very little metalworking experience. I think I'd rather use a larger router than a trim router. So I guess what I'm saying is that I'd prefer to build a machine that will last for awhile and be versatile enough for many different wood projects.
However, I don't want a 4'X8' machine at this point. 2x4 would be fine for now. Cost is always a factor. I want to keep my expenditures to $1500 max. Do-able?
I realize this may be the old chevy vs ford vs toyota debate but can folks weigh in on some some suggestions for which design I may want to build?
    Thanks in advance, Jim

Joes 2006 would probably be your best bet. $1500 may be tight, but doable if your careful.

To keep cost down, a good idea is to check out different machine auctions and such and try and find something that has many usable components in one purchase. I bought a machine that use to be a government bullet inspector, got it for $100 and it came with both a y and z axis with slides and everything as well as a 3/4 inch thick aluminum plate that I used for my machine bed. Good Luck!

I agree with ger21. Joes 2006. Thats what I built. 2 x 4 bed lots of usable area. I currently have a Milwaukee 625 mounted on it. I built an aluminum plate for the Z carriage and bought the mount from K2. There are a ton of build threads and lots of owners/builders to help you out with questions. Most of the machine is MDF which is relatively cheap. Joe sells kits if you want pre-cut parts, but you can cut your own with some enginuity. I think the plans are online, but there are plenty of build threads to help. There are also lots of mods that users have made to add to the usefullness.
