    cnc backgauge

I would like to build a cnc backgauge for my shear and box brake.
I know nothing about servo motors and drives. I can build the slides with ballscrews but need help with the electronics.

The electronics are no problem. You buy motors, controller, and a parallel cable to your PC. What exactly is it you are planning? How much torque do you expect this thing will need to make it move? How much do you want to spend? How fast does it need to move? We need more info to help you effectively.

    I wish it wouldn't crash.

For a alternative to using your PC Eaton CutlerHammer makes a single axis position controler. I have them installed on three of our machine were I work.

The speed I would like is about 150 to 200 IPM, that controller that rcrabb mentioned sounds like what I'm looking for (so I do not have to have a pc at each station) as long as it can somehow operate a digital display and have just a forward and backward jog button. Would I be better of using a servo motor with and encoder to insure postion and also a brake so when you slide a sheet of material against the stop it wont move.
As far as how much to spend I do not mind spending what it takes to make it right within reason.

    Thanks for the help

The single axis position controler has 4 move settings and a home setting. backlash compensation. kerf settings. It uses a built in 20 amp contactor. You can use any AC or DC motor you just need an encoder.
