    Question HSK tool holders

I'm familiar with R8, CAT and BT tool holder tapers. Not to mention ISO, JT and other misc ones like QC. But what about HSK?

What is the advantage of these tool holder tapers and why aren't they used more today on the smaller machines?

Is it that they don't use pull studs? How do they clamp and align anyway?

I should have guessed that there would be an entire website dedicated to it.

The Capto system is becoming popular as well. We just got a Okuma Multus and it has a C6 spindle. I've used Capto before on mills and noticed a big difference with rigidity and runout compared to a CAT40 spindle. I was running a 1in Sandvik 490 cutter in both applications(it was the same job on two different machines). The capto machine was newer so it did have that as an advantage but I was able to take out one depth cut and the inserts wore more evenly.

I suspect the world would adopt the HSK's as THE standard for tool holders if it wasn't for the price.

We've been using them and building machines with HSK spindles for a long time. BUT many clients/customers don't like the cost of re-tooling to use the HSK's. They are pricey.
