Are you using just one (1) 7007 ac lower bearing? It looks like your retaining ring only has a couple of threads engaged. I've been thinking about milling the quill sleeve 6 to 7 mm to enable the use of two (2) lower bearings.

Yes just a single lower AC bearing.
My dust cover seems thicker than ones I've seen on later models and/or the threads
could have been compromised during one of the many times it was worked over during
all the belt drive tests and such.
It's just a dust cover though.

Just changed to "cncmoose".
I'm modeling the quill sleeve to see if there will be enough strength "meat" after milling 6 or 7 mm to allow the use of two (2) bearings.
Besides, I have 2 quill sleeves one stock and one to experiment with.
That depth might be enough.
I experimented with double lowers but didn't take it further.
A single AC has a dynamic load around 4000 lbs. so I left it at that.
May as well try though if you already have a spare quill sleeve to experiment with.

It would be nice to see a 4th axis attachment that could be expanded upon to make a 5th axis without having to buy a completely different setup. I think that's what you have in store for your new rotary table?
Well if you don't want to tilt the head for the 5th or use a rotary table on a trunnion as a 5th
another option would be to add a powered tilt to the rotary.
Not on my project list though.

I usually order my cut pieces from Speedy Metals and as much as I try not to I always click on the "fire sale" section and start clicking away. I usually end spending more on the misc. pieces then I went there for. Nice thing they are usually odd ball size and priced right...great for building inventory.

Thanks Hoss for the great info here and answering my questions through email. I've been a long time lurker here on CNCZone. I ordered my very first mill (G0704) and cant wait to start learning how to use it. Once I get the machine, I'll be getting your dvd to convert it to CNC.
Grizzly said they're getting a shipment in on November 27 in the washington warehouse, I have a feeling I wont be getting one from that shipment. Let's see how long it'll take to get one.

Hoss, I'm slowly making progress on my G0704 following many of your modifications.
I was wondering how far in your tapered gibs are. My X & Y are almost at their max depth. I will note that I used maybe 5 applications of 800 grit lapping compound. I just barely got the machining marks out of the ways. I've noticed too, that the gib angle does not seem to match very well with the dovetail - it seems to rub more at the top of the gib.
If the gib does bottom out, what do you think of placing some shim stock behind it? I fear if the stock is too thin, it could want to roll up on itself during the adjustment of the gib.....just thinking outloud. Maybe I just need to order another set of gibs.

Tooling marks aren't a bad thing actually, they help retain oil.
If you've removed too much material you may need some new gibs strips, pics would help to compare with mine.
As a last resort, a shim epoxied onto the gib strip may keep it in place (on the outer face that sees no movement)
but it's likely only needs a very thin shim and probably won't hold up.
If it needs a lot of shim, adding a thin piece of turcite to the inner face could be an option
though not cheaper than new gib strips.

Hoss - I may try setting some .005in shim stock on the backside of the gib to make use of the existing gib.
New gibs from Grizzly are only $8/each - so no huge loss if I need to purchase new ones.
I know the taper is shallow, I'm just suprised that I could have removed so much material lapping the ways with 800 grit.
My Y-axis way is beautiful. The gib is fairly tight and she moves as smooth as butter. My X-axis does seem to stick a little at the extremes, but managable. I'm sure the table will break in once I start running her too.
My goal wasn't to remove all the machine marks, but to provide more surface contact for stability.
Just as a point of reference for me, how deep are your gibs on your machine? Perhaps just reference the head of the forward gib screw...proud of casting, sitting even or down into the counterbore would be helpful.
