Justin, Lowes or Home Depot carry MDF. Lots of other places too. Shouldn't be too hard to find.

As to tapping it, use coars threads, then before you install the bolt, coat the threads with thin super glue. This will soak into the pores and make MDF viable for its use. After the glue dries, run the tap in again to clean up the threads and then you are ready for the bolt. For some parts (end caps that hold the rods) T-Nuts can be useful as an alternative. I think you'll do just fine, you are asking all the right questions.

where could one just buy the prebuilt frame, rod, and bearings, and just add there own controller and servos? Or a kitt that you can build the frame with? I saw one recently, but can't seem to find it.

I thought my threads were strong enough without the sugerglue trick.. as a result I am having to basic rebuild entire sections of my router because with time, the screws stripped out (I Assume this is due to a combination of over-tightening, as well as vibration).

If I had followed the friendly advice on here, i would be cutting pieces now, instead of still working on my machine !!

Great set of plans. I downloaded the jgro plans they were in pdf, if possible could I get a copy in dxf format so that I could print them at full scale. I have an E size printer and would like to use full size drawing as template for drilling all holes. New in hobby and this will be first attempt at building a router.

Thank YOU ! I've already purchased two other CNC router plans @ $30.00 each and they are NO way as nice and detailed as yours. And it wasn't that I felt I got ripped off with those other two sets of plans either. I am extremely anxios to undertake this project!

Just multiply the decimal by 32 and round. So .322 is 10/32 which is 5/16.

Very nice contribution. The Y yoke assembly looks like it would create a lot of outward force on the guide rails. Has anyone built this and found this to be an issue ?

This was an issue for me. It made adjustments a real pain. Don't tighten enough, you get slop. Tighten too much, the rails bow. I'm working on a new design based on fully supported rails as demonstrated by Gerry and Steve.

I am interested in building a small (12" wide, 18 inches long, with a Z-axis of about 5 inches) cnc machine for making small parts.

Can someboyd please explain the advantages/disadvantages between having a moving table and fixed gantry or having a fixed table and moving gantry?

I understand that the moving table will require a larger footprint, but are there issues with a moving gantry, such as maintaining precision? I will be making things like wood carvings, so i am only looking at tolerances of about 0.05+/-.
