Which is The most efficience bit for Rough very Deep Pocketing ?

I have a project that require deep pocketing hardwood.
Does anyone ever compare which bit is the most efficience in term of time ?

Which kind of shape ? Flute etc ? And where to get it ?
I need about 2 inch deep.

Does upcut is better than downcut bit for this matter?

    Regards

I've been using single edge compression spirals for stuff like this, since it leaves a very clean top edge. You need to be sure your depth of cut is larger than the upcut length to take advantage. They do make a mortise compression spiral, which has a shorter upcut length. A downcut may tend to push chips down under the bit, though it might be fine if you have a decent dust collection system. But my vote still is for the compression spiral. You';d probably need 1/2" diameter to ge one with a 2" flute length. Check Onsrud.com or ToolsToday.com (Amana). Whiteside may make one as well.

For rough cutting, you won't find anything better than these. They cut incredibly fast, with much lower cutting forces, and lower noise. The downside is that they leave a rippled edge.
