Switching Power Supply Multiplier with Back EMF Clamp 80V, 50V, 25V up to 1050W

    Hi All!

I wanted to let you know about our new line of regulated switching power supplies for servo and stepper motor applications. I have been using Gecko Drives and similar for years for bigger machine retrofits and finding an affordable 80V regulated supply that can handle the back EMF from decelerating motors has been a real challenge. Based on the idea that other folks have this same problem I have come up with a solution that has these two primary features:

    1. Multiple power supplies can safely be installed in series to increase output voltage
    2. The power supplies and load (Gecko Drives) are protected from over-voltage due to motor back EMF

The Back EMF Clamp is a thoughtfully designed circuit that uses a comparator and MOSFET to dissipate the back EMF energy, and diodes protect each supply for safe series operation. Pricing for just the back EMF Clamp for one power supply is $48.75. We sell 3 models for one, two, and three series power supplies, along with complete power supplies. Our most powerful supply is 80Vdc @ 14.6A and is $247.06.

Please check out Power Supplies | Protoplant for full details, there are a lot of features that I have not mentioned here. We have put a ton of work into the power web page and you can download complete documentation, including 2D drawings and solid models of all our products.

A couple images of our products are attached.

Let me know if you have any questions or comments, any feedback would be great!
    Thanks for checking this out,
    Dustin

This is a good idea, but not new, most that use low voltage Servos have to have something like what you have done

Dmm have been doing this for there low voltage Servo drives for many years, they have this built into there Breakout Board

That's not correct. The DMM product is not a back EMF protector...just a fat filter capacitor. dustincram has a nice product for a specific problem at a good price. I have no related interest, except in electrical engineering.

    Hi Mactec54,

Thanks for the reply! No, it is not a totally original idea, there are quite a few home-brew schematics out there and some commercial options with similar functionality. That said I believe we have great pricing and a really unique set of features, including diodes for safe series power supply operation, active voltage clamping, and indicators for when the back EMF voltage exceeds 10V over the input (full details @ Power Supplies | Protoplant).

Also, I thoroughly read the datasheet for the DMB4250-8B break-out board, and while it has nice filter caps, signal isolation, and terminals I did not see anything about over-voltage or back EMF clamping. Maybe they do it in the drives? Lots of higher end drives do, but not some of the popular ones like Gecko. DMM does have some really nice looking products!

What you are seeing is the power filter, the switching power supplies go into the filter to smooth the power, Up to 20A before they go into the AC Servo Drives, it then has the diodes Etc to protect from any Back EMF that can go back to the power supplies & does a great job, & works the same as what dustincram has done
