Looking for advice on how to spend my $$$$

    Hi,

Im fairly new to the DIY CNC scene. I've been researching for a while, but still very much a noob.
Im designing a CNC mill for aluminium.

Im at the stage where I want to start buying electronics, controllers etc, but would like some feedback on some different setups.
I have a few different configs, this is going to be my first build, and I want a machine that will be able to carry my future requirements. All costs are in AUD.

Im looking for feedback on the difference in motor, driver, BOB quality/functionality, and cost.
Also, if you have any suggestions for me, I would be very grateful.

    Setup 1
    Option 1.1 Cost: $438.74,
    4Axis Nema 23 Stepper Motor 425oz-in

    Option 1.2 Cost: $423.34,
4 Axis Nema 23 stepper motor 425 oz

    Option 1.3 Cost: $377.72,
    4 axis CNC controller kit 4PCS Nema23 112mm/3A/425 oz-in

    Option 1.4 Cost: $330.36,
4 pcs Nema 23 dual shaft stepper motor 425 oz.in CNC
    4 Axis Wantai DQ420MA 36VDC
    36V 9.7A 350W AC/DC Switching Power Supply (2 req'd)

    Setup 2
    Option 2.1 Cost: $$453.29
    3rd Gen 4 Axis TB6560 Driver Kit, Handle,Display,3Nm Nema 23 Stepping Motors,PSU

    Option 2.2 Cost: $241.50
    24V 15A 360W DC Switch Power Supply
    CNC Digital Display Module
CNC TB6560 4 Axis 3.5A Stepper Motor Driver Board
4 pcs Nema 23 dual shaft stepper motor 425 oz.in

    Thanks,
    Nick

I didn't look at all the individual options but have 2 recommendations:

    - Scrap all options with a TB6560 based drive, a lot of people have problems with these, the design doesn't meet the requirements of the TB6560 chip.
    - Also scrap all set's where the motor inductance is higher than 2.5 mH, these sets will not produce torque at high speed, the motor spec's don't match with the drives.

The motors and drives need to be a good match for the drive system. Assuming your using leadscrews? If so, 425oz motors are usually a poor choice due to their high inductance, which limits their rpm.

The proper way to choose motors is to choose target velocity and acceleration values, and then find motors and drives that will work well with your drive components to meet the performance goals. Just picking motors based on torque ratings is a shot in the dark.

OK, back to the drawing board then.
I was going to use the 6560 boards because of the price, but maybe I can reduce the motor size to offset the price of using the DQ542MA stepper drivers?
I was going to do the hack to the 6560 boards to fix the sloppyness of them, LINK, is this a good idea?

I'll see what I can come up with over the weekend and post back.

    Thanks for the feedback.
