The time has come the woodworker said to speak of many things. 0f routers and Wood , chips and paints and stains and CNC and other things.
Looking good Gerry.
Just what i need for some upcoming projects.

How is work on the dovetail program progressing.

I work on it 4-5 days a week, whenever I can. It's progressing well.
I hope to have the dovetail portion finished in a few weeks. It's not going to be just a dovetail program, so there's still a ways to go. But the dovetails are by far the most complex part (I hope).

Gerry;
Any chance you will release the dovetail portion of the program before everything is completed?
Greg
Actually, yes, I'm probably going to do that, as it's taking a lot longer than I had hoped.
My plan is to release it with dovetails only, at a reduced price. As more joints are added, the price will go up.
The dovetails are nearly done, but there are a lot of other little things to finish up, that take a lot of time.

Dovetails are finished !! Mostly.

I'm going to start writing a manual in a few days. My plan is to offer a limited number of pre-release/beta versions at a reduced price, hopefully around the beginning of September. The reason I'm taking this route is that I'm having a bit of trouble getting reliable beta testers. I figure that if someone is paying me, then they'll actually use it and give me some feedback.

Looks interesting! Will your software also work in metric units?
Cheers Christoph

Yes, metric or Imperial. As long as you don't try to mix them.

Test cuts for website photos. All the joints in the images were cut with the same bit.
I have a few different sized dovetail bits on order so I can make several more samples with different looks.
I should probably dig through our scrap pile at work to see if I can find a wider variety of different woods to use as well.

Gerry, those look fantastic. I think it is time for me to start thinking about a vertical clamping system.
Beautiful joinery Gerry. Looking forward to the release date.
A quick question.
If the bit is long enough and since the pieces are mounted vertically can you set up more than one piece at a time to cut?
This would be a great saving in setup time and the interior pieces would have no splintering.
For through dovetails, yes, you can cut multiple tail boards at the same time. As long as your machine can reach out far enough.
You can't cut multiple pin boards because the toolpaths are not perpendicular to the boards (The pins are angled).
You can also cut pairs of joints in a single g-code file (both left and right hand).
For half blind, only one board at a time, although pins and tails can be cut at the same time.
Tool length is not an issue. The depth doesn't change when cutting multiple boards.
In all my samples so far, the cuts have been very clean with almost no splintering (small amount in red oak).
In the pics above, the joints were glued right off the machine, and no filler was used.
Some woods may definitely be prone to splitting, especially baltic birch plywood, which is often used for drawers. New, sharp tooling is important for good results.

Gerry,
Thank you for the quick reply.
For half blind dovetails, I have a manual machine made by Alexander Dodds with 12 spindles on one inch centers (maximum depth drawer I can cut is about 10 inches)..
You cut the pins by placing two boards (finished outside of boards together) vertically in the machine and follow a dye to make the cut.
This cuts the pins with the circular portion (inside of the pin) in on the outside in one pass. The drawer fronts/backs are made with a "jig" change and a plunge cut with the board mounted horizontally..
With the drawer sides already cut to size I can cut dovetails for about 30-40 drawers in an hour. It is a wonderful machine, is fast and very accurate, but
how many machines do you have to have? It would take a little longer with your system, have more flexibility on the dovetail type and one less machine on the floor!
I will be very interested in the software when you have it available.
Hopefully in the next 2-4 weeks.

I'm looking forward to this Gerry! I am building a new machine with a gantry that extends past the table for machining the end of a board. This software would be a perfect match to new router!
Great results, Ger!!! I can see you've been busy!
