    Continuously lost Z

    Hi everyone,

I just had a weird thing happen that ruined a fairly pricey piece of stock. The program was supposed to be making a series of concentric planar endmill cuts. Instead of being planar, it cut in a helical pattern, with pretty much the entire cut being too deep. The rate of Z travel seemed to decrease as the cut went along, so that by the end there was very little Z motion. I rechecked the origin when it was done, and sure enough the Z0 was off by .103" in the positive direction. Any thoughts? Details are below.

    Thanks!
    Tom

    Re: Continuously lost Z

Solved: The cutter pulled the quill down. Took me a while to realize that could happen because of the helix angle of the tool. I'll go with lighter cuts and reef on the quill lock.
